Information
The Darien Fire Marshal's office is located in the Town Hall. The
personnel include a Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Marshal, Secretary, and a part-time
Fire Inspector. The
Fire Marshal's Office represents Darien's three Volunteer Fire Departments: Darien,
Noroton, and Noroton Heights.
The Darien Fire Marshal's Office works with and through the Connecticut State Fire Marshal's Office
which is a division of the Connecticut Department of Public Safety. Building Officials and
Fire Marshals are under the State Department of Public Safety.
The State Fire Marshals work with the Connecticut State Police
and the State Forensic Laboratory.
The Darien Fire Marshal's Office enforces Connecticut State Law,
Chapter 541, Sections 29-291 through 29-370, which includes the Connecticut Fire Safety
Code. Referenced National Codes and local ordinances are also enforced.
Both the Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Marshal, and Inspector are
State certified and must maintain a minimum of 90 additional credits every three
years to maintain certification.
All occupancies in Darien, except for one and two-family
residences, fall under the jurisdiction of the Fire Marshal and require plan review,
construction inspection and annual inspections thereafter. Occupancies are required by law
to be upgraded to the latest codes in effect at the time of their construction or annual
inspection.
Duties, as prescribed by State Law in addition to plan review and
inspections, include fire investigation (for cause and origin), permits for blasting and
flammable liquid tanks, certification of hazardous materials transport vehicles,
certification of nursery schools and day care centers, convalescent centers
certification, certification of all liquor permit premises, and fire prevention education
programs.
The Fire Marshal issues permits and inspects all gasoline,
commercial fuel oil and liquid petroleum gas tank installations in the Town and
investigates and works with the State Department of
Environmental Protection on all hazardous materials spills.
