Darien Human Services offers a variety of services and support to the residents of Darien. The staff has a wide range of experience and training in the area of Human Services and is available to assist residents either by phone, e-mail or in their office at Town Hall. Back-to-School Supplies Drive - now through August 30: The Back-to-School Program helps eligible Darien school children get off to a good start with backpacks, school supplies and gift cards for shoes or sneakers. Human Services is in particular need of new, large backpacks in blue or black which can be purchased at Costco or any major retailer. Gift cards to Walmart and Kohl's are also greatly appreciated. The Back-to-School Program is one of the many services that Human Services provides to the residents of Darien. If you're interested in donating backpacks or gift cards, please call the office at 203-656-7328 (Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm) or stop by Human Services in Town Hall, Room 109.
2019 Renters Rebate Program: Darien senior citizens and/or disabled residents who are renters may be eligible for a rent rebate from the State of Connecticut for the year 2018. We will begin accepting applications on Monday, April 1, 2019. The programs runs through September 30, 2019. Please see here for more information.
Affordable Housing: The Darien Housing Authority (DHA) owns and operates Old Town Hall Houses (719 Post Road) which are restricted to lower-income elderly and disabled households and individuals. The apartments are being rebuilt and the waitlist is currently closed. DHA also owns and operates The Heights (24 Allen O’Neill Drive), a mix of income-restricted one, two, and three bedroom dwellings. All interested parties should contact the Darien Housing Authority at 203-655-0866. Darien Human Services is not affiliated with DHA and cannot handle any inquiries.
Discount Vouchers for Local Farmers Markets: Low income seniors may be eligible to receive discount vouchers through the Connecticut Department of Agriculture's Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) which provides vouchers for locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey. Vouchers can be redeemed at any local Farmers Market and are valid through October 30, 2019. The Darien Farmers Market is held every Wednesday from 10am to 3pm in the Goodwives Shopping Center parking lot.
Vouchers are limited and will be distributed on a firm come, first served basis. Interested seniors (60 or older) must be Darien residents and have a maximum household income of no more than 185% of the federal poverty level ($1926/month for single; $2607/month for a couple). Proof of income is required. Please call 203-656-7328 to schedule an appointment.
Emergency Call List: Staff keeps a list of Darien seniors and disabled individuals to contact prior to a storm or town-wide emergency to provide reassurance and peace of mind. Staff will also inform residents of resources available in the community such as Emergency Shelters and Cooling Centers. If you are a Darien resident and would like to have your name added tot he Emergency Call List, please call 203-656-7328.
Homebound with unused Rx Medications? Darien Police Officers will collect them from your home by appointment. Click here for more info.
The Household Supply Closet is designed to meet the needs of low income Darien residents by providing much-needed household items such as paper goods, cleaning supplies, and personal grooming and hygiene products. The closet is partially funded by private donations. To see the list of needed items click here. Donations can be dropped off in Room 109. Thank you!
The Loan Closet provides free, short term loans of durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches. A refundable deposit of $50 (check payable to "Town of Darien") is required for wheelchairs, transport chairs and walkers with a seat.
Municipal Veteran's Representative: Ali Ramsteck, LCSW, Director, is a Municipal Veteran's Representative for the town of Darien and is available to meet with veterans and their families to provide support, information and referral to local, state, and federal agencies that serve veterans and their dependents.

Veteran's Property Tax Exemption: Veterans, who have ninety (90) days of wartime service, including Merchant marines, who served during WWII, are eligible for a $1,500 exemption for property tax purposes. You have the option to apply this exemption to your real estate or automobile tax. For more information, please visit the Darien Tax Assessor's site.
