Thanksgiving Grocery Store Gift Card Drive:  To help struggling Darien residents this Thanksgiving, Human Services is holding a Thanksgiving Grocery Store Gift Card Drive from Monday, November 2 through Tuesday, November 24.  We are collecting gift cards to local grocery stores (Stop & Shop, Shop Rite, Palmers, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods) and distributing them to Darien families and seniors.  Residents are asked to mail them to: Darien Human Services; 2 Renshaw Road or drop them off at Town Hall.  Please call the office at 203-656-7328 prior to dropping off the cards.  Thank you for helping to make the holidays a little more special for your neighbors in need.

Human Services Holiday Gift Giving Program:  2020 has been an extremely difficult year for all of us.  Unfortunately, the COVID crisis has had a greater impact on low-income families and seniors.  During the holidays, Human Services holds a Holiday Gift Giving Program to help Darien families and seniors in need.  We are looking for individuals or groups (book clubs, bible study groups, Girl or Boy Scout troops) to help make someone's holiday a little brighter by adopting a local family or senior.  Please see the attached or email Diane Barston or call 203-656-7328 for more information.  Thank you for helping us help others!

The Connecticut Energy Assistance Program helps eligible Darien households pay for primary heating bills.  If your household's primary heating costs are included in your rent, you may also apply for assistance.  We will begin accepting applications for the 2020-2021 program on Monday, September 14 for households who heat with oil and Tuesday, October 13 for households who heat with electricity, gas or propane.  Residents must meet certain income restrictions, provide proof of income and proof of assets.  Please click here for more information.

Donations:  We gladly accept donations of gift cards, household products, and medical equipment.
Gift Cards for Shop-Rite, Stop & Shop, gas stations, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, and AMEX, MasterCard or Visa are all needed throughout the year and are much appreciated by families and seniors in need.
Monetary Donations:  If you prefer to make a monetary donation, you can do so by mailing a check directly to Human Services, 2 Renshaw Road (checks payable to Darien Human Services)
Household Products:  New (unopened) full-size cleaning supplies, paper goods, and personal grooming and hygiene products are used to help stock our Home Goods Closet.  (No trial sizes, please).
Medical Equipment:  We accept donations of new (or gently-used) wheelchairs, transport chairs, walkers, crutches and canes.  Personal hygiene equipment such as commodes and shower chairs must be new and unopened.  Please call our office prior to dropping off the equipment.
All donations can be dropped off at Room 109 of Town Hall.

Emergency Call List:  The staff of Darien Human Services maintains an Emergency Call List with the names of vulnerable seniors and disabled individuals to contact prior to and after a storm or town-wide emergency.  The staff will provide reassurance and a wellness check and will also inform residents of resources available in the community, such as Emergency Shelters and Cooling or Charging Centers.  If you are a Darien resident and would like your name added to the Emergency Call List or are concerned about an elderly neighbor, please call Darien Human Serivces at 203-656-7328 or email Ali Ramsteck, Director, LCSW, at

The Household Supply Closet is designed to meet the needs of low income Darien residents by providing much-needed household items such as paper goods, cleaning supplies, and personal grooming and hygiene products.  The closet is partially funded by private donations.  We are collecting new, full size household goods products (no sample size products please) during March.  To see the list of needed items click here.  Donations can be dropped off in Room 109.  Thank you!

The Loan Closet provides free, short term loans of durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches.  A refundable deposit of $50 (check payable to "Town of Darien") is required for wheelchairs, transport chairs and walkers with a seat.

Municipal Veteran's Representative:  Ali Ramsteck, LCSW, Director, is a Municipal Veteran's Representative for the town of Darien and is available to meet with veterans and their families to provide support, information and referral to local, state, and federal agencies that serve veterans and their dependents.
